Fletcher, Beth

Beth Fletcher was born in 1981 and studied for a BA and MA in Fine Art at the University of Wales Aberystwyth. She graduated in 2004, and has been painting and exhibiting continuously since then.

The landscapes seascapes of the Ceredigion coast had a large influence on her and this is an area she still likes to return to in her work. More recently the intricate and yet open spaces of the moorlands the coast and the estuaries of the South West have been entering into her work.

She prefers not to work directly from the landscape but in the studio, under the influence of the memory of original response in a more contemplative and considered manner. The work is not always fixed to a description of a particular place, owing more to stored memories of places and experiences than to a conscious effort to reproduce an exact topographical area.

Paintings evolve under the influence of each new mark set down on the ground, changing in response to their own progress.

“For me, painting is as much about touch as vision, and is always more successful when the process is as much about feeling and memory as conscious thought and decision.”

Her interpretation of the landscape shows a touch well beyond her years and is noted for its freshness, the passionate lines and exquisite use of colour.
