GallerySCA are thrilled to announce a mixed show by members of the Pastel Society UK for September. Friday 10th September is the private view and all are welcome. This is the first time the PS has shown as a group outside of London in some time so it is a ‘must see’ show with some of the countries very best pastellists showing work. We kick off at 5.30pm and go on until 8.30.  Nicolas of Shrewsbury will be offering a selection of their wines for tasting on the evening.

George Thompson will also be giving a demonstration on Wednesday the 15th of September at 2pm, places are limited so please book your spot early. The show will run until October 16th.

 Another part of my work looks at my interest in the decline of the ceramic industry. These pieces (Vases) concentrate on using traditional industrial techniques of mould making. Following a similar theme to the other work it uses print to show the historical status the industry and its workers once had, as well as the distressed surface relating to industrial methods like sprigging making symbolic reference to the downfall of the ceramic industry. Like the cracked original wax moulds the pieces act as an icon of the remains of a once thriving workplace.

Being made for a competition with the Wedgwood Museum; some of these Vases now sit with in there permanent collection after being selected as the overall winner.

 

Ian says of his work;
“My work does not explore any one theme, but many. Likewise, I do not restrict myself to any one media, but consider it important to be flexible. I feel too rigid working procedures can restrict the creative possibilities within a subject.
In recent years etching has come to be my primary vehicle of expression. Many of my etchings utilise traditional techniques and processes, but a large part of my work remains experimental, continuing established traditions of the artist as a printmaker.”

 

Gary Long is a figurative painter who is invloved in the making of images concerned with the coast, sea, sky, weather and the impressions they leave.

Gary Long was born in Birmingham, England in 1945. He attended Birmingham College of Art after which he spent two years working as an illustrator in Vancouver, Canada. On returning to England, made advanced studies at Manchester College of Art graduating with the equivalent of an MA by research.

Since leaving college, Gary has worked as a successful illustrator on numerous national and international accounts in publishing and advertising.

He is an artist member of the Society of Illustrators in New York and a part time lecturer at the University College Falmouth. Gary, with his Canadian wife Pat, recently moved to St Ives from Devon to be closer to the environment that most inspires him.

Friday 16th July is the Private View for Jon’s latest show ‘A year on the Mynd’. As the title suggests the show details a year on and around the Long Mynd. More in terms of a seasonal year rather than a chronological year as it is more like two years worth of sketching and note taking. It will include an insight into the way he works both in the studio and in the field.

The PV is between 7 and 9pm on Friday the 16th AND PLEASE NOTE THE VENUE IS THE GATEWAY not gallerySCA and all are welcome and an RSVP would be appreciated. The show continues throughout August.

Another key new piece of note is Icarus, a beautifully structured one off bronze casting on stainless steel stand measuring approx five feet including the stand with Emma’s trade mark articulated limbs.

Sarah Dunstan works from the Gaolyard Studios situated in St. Ives, Cornwall renowned for its thriving artistic community. The studios were established by the potter John Bedding in 1999. It’s an ideal environment to work in for the 9 potters whose studios link to a communal area where numerous cups of coffee, knowledge and kilns are shared.

The process.

I collect images, such as the shape of the railing in a hidden doorway in St.Ives or writing on an antique glass bottle. I use my sketchbook to draw and paint these impressions but also as a scrapbook. Feathers, fabric and packaging are glued in next to photos. These photos are fragmented memories of places I’ve visited, a close up detail of a Greek sign perhaps, or advertising on a French café wall.

With the clay rolled out in front of me, I start to play. I might begin with a block of colour then introduce an area of decoration that moves across the surface breaking out of one area and travelling around what will become a 3 dimensional piece. Like a painter, I work over the surface until it appears to be ‘right’. When the work is constructed I get a surprise, hopefully a good one, and the composition that felt right as a flat plane does something new when it becomes a vessel.

 

She has exhibited regularly including the RWA Open print exhibiton Bristol 2009.
